RIM: PlayBook to come with nonremovable, 5300mAh battery Read more: RIM PlayBook tablet to come with nonremovable, 5300mAh battery

Post  Admin on Sat Jan 15, 2011 3:23 am

RIM (NASDAQ: RIMM) has offered additional details of the as-yet unreleased PlayBook, following reports that questioned the battery life of its initial foray in tablet market. The PlayBook will ship with a 1GHz OMAP 4430 chip and 1GB of working memory, as well as another 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage memory. It will have a 3-megapixel front-facing camera, a 5-megapixel rear-facing one, and will round off with micro USB and micro HDMI ports. More interestingly though, is the revelation by Senior Product Manager Ryan Bidan that the PlayBook will come with a 5,300-milliamp-hour (mAh) battery, and that it will be nonremovable.

As a comparison, the iPad packs about 10,000 mAh, a much larger size. Most smartphones come with batteries of between 850mAh and 2,000 mAh. By any measure, the PlayBook will contain the largest battery of any devices manufactured by RIM, whose co-CEO Mike Lazaridis is known to take the battery performance of BlackBerry smartphones very seriously. Certainly, RIM must be feeling intense pressure on this front, and while Bidan won't quote any estimates at this point, he is adamant that the company's goal remains focused on "full day" usage.
