Technology Allows Honda Get Rare Materials from Recycling Batteries

Post  juda on Sat Apr 21, 2012 2:41 am

We are increasingly using rechargeable batteries. With the increase of energy consumption of the processors in smartphones and tablets, was also necessary to develop batteries with higher capacity. The problem is that these energy sources use rare materials on the planet that can not be reused. At least before the technology developed by Honda.

The Japanese manufacturer has created a technique capable of reusing materials such as nickel and cobalt, widely used in batteries, especially nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH). The method particularly benefit the production of automobiles. In Japan and the United States is not hard to find electric cars or hybrids like the Toyota Prius, walking the streets

Honda promising technique developed by reusing at least 80% of the rare materials battery.
The process developed jointly with Japan Metals & Chemicals (JMC) will collect at least 80% of the rare materials of nimh batteries. As the materials are extracted from the same purity and do not need to go through further treatment, Honda intends to use them in new batteries, so that manufacturing costs are lower.

The technique was successfully implemented in a production line of the JMC. Currently only electric car batteries will be recycled, but the industry has plans to expand the process to lithium batteries (Li-ion) used in our gadgets.

With partial recovery like that, if you make ten new lithium batteries, you can recycle the materials to make 45 batteries in total before you have too little material to make one, so the recycling allows for 4.5 times the use of the same material.
